Duality is the marriage of two suites: Spacetime and Heroes & Villains. Piano for two hands, tonal composition. Written, performed and recorded by Brad Torres in 2007.

Following a stint at the conservatory of music, where more avant-garde styles of music were taught, Brad leaned heavily into tonal composition, falling back on his original love of modern musical theatre soundscapes.

His first opus was Spacetime, a series of interconnected motifs designed to evoke feelings of moving through time and space. The entire piece was relatively short, as the motifs were established and not extrapolated upon.

Feeling the joy of completing the study, Brad then began to tackle his next project, along the same vein as Spacetime. With the idea of creating themes for characters, real and fictional, that served as varying levels of inspiration to him, Brad began work on his second opus, Heroes & Villains.

​

In this composition, Brad maintained his desire to keep the themes tonal, but he began to explore more intricate modalities, part-voicing, and tone painting. Each piece was intended to evoke the feeling of its chosen character in as close to totality as he could muster.

Both "Alfred's White Face Paint" and "Dream of the Lionhearted" were optioned by outside productions.

It has long been a dream of Brad's to reopen the journals in which he wrote these pieces, and turn each motif into a full movement.
